Afghan Society In The West Midlands
Charity 1144725
Overview
Summary
The available evidence suggests that Afghan Society In The West Midlands is evolving from a community-focused education and welfare charity into a broader faith-centred community institution based at Masjid Abu Bakr Siddique. Its role appears to combine cultural continuity, practical support and religious infrastructure: using the mosque as a place through which Afghan residents can access learning, advice, social connection and mutual aid, while also inviting participation beyond the Afghan community.

Evidence and reasoning
Supporting evidence
Remaining uncertainties
- Direct evidence confirms that the charity reports operating in Birmingham City, Dudley and Sandwell, but neither the Charity Commission record nor the organisation's website identifies a current service, event, partner delivery point or physical site within a named Birmingham ward or the City Centre.
- The organisation's clearly evidenced physical service base is Masjid Abu Bakr Siddique in Smethwick; this is outside the supplied Birmingham area list. The separately registered Smethwick address may be a correspondence address rather than an operational site.
- Regional coverage is a reasonable interpretation of the charity's reported operation across Birmingham City, Dudley and Sandwell and its West Midlands-facing identity. It does not establish that delivery is evenly distributed, or that the organisation has a citywide Birmingham operational footprint.
- No material delivery partnerships extending the organisation's geography were identified in the supplied website content or Charity Commission record.
Additional evidence needed
- A current timetable, programme leaflet, annual report or service register identifying the Birmingham venues, wards or neighbourhoods in which education, advice, poverty-relief or community activities are delivered.
- Confirmation from the organisation of whether Birmingham activity is delivered from the Smethwick mosque, through outreach venues, or through partner organisations.
- Details of any current formal partners, referral arrangements or satellite venues operating within Birmingham.

Observations
A mosque appears to be the organisation's delivery platform
The organisation appears to operate less as a standalone advice or education provider and more as a mosque-centred community anchor, combining worship, classes, welfare fundraising and family services in one setting.
Why it matters
This helps explain how it may build trust and reach people: religious participation, cultural belonging and practical support seem mutually reinforcing rather than separate services.

Its formal purpose and public-facing identity have broadened in different directions
The charity's objects foreground educational attainment, English, poverty relief and recreation, while its website foregrounds a mosque and Islamic services. This may indicate an expanded operating model, or a shift in how the organisation now presents its primary role.
Why it matters
The distinction is important for understanding both its potential partnerships: schools, advice providers and welfare organisations as well as faith networks; and whether its current activity remains aligned with its original charitable emphasis.

The organisation may bridge a specific diaspora community and wider local participation
It appears rooted in the Afghan community while retaining an outward-facing educational offer. This could make it a useful bridge between culturally specific support and broader local inclusion, particularly for people facing language or literacy barriers.
Why it matters
This suggests potential value beyond specialist provision: the organisation may hold trusted relationships with people whom mainstream services can struggle to reach.

- Whether English, school-support, accommodation and employment advice services are currently delivered, and at what scale.
- Whether the mosque website represents the charity's full operation, a recent rebranding, or one part of a wider structure.
- Which local organisations, schools or public services the charity works with.
Remaining uncertainties
- Recent annual reports, accounts and activity reports showing service volumes, spending and beneficiary groups.
- Evidence of partnerships, referral routes and outcomes for education, advice and poverty-relief activity.
