Overview

Summary

Sources:Civic AtlasAI-assisted

The available evidence suggests that Somali Relief And Development Organisation is intended to operate as a bridge between Somali communities facing disadvantage and the systems needed for safety, inclusion and opportunity. Its formal objects describe support for refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in the UK, while its stated activity focuses on children and widows in Somalia. This points to a potentially transnational role, but the evidence does not yet show how its UK-facing and Somalia-facing work connect in practice.

    Evidence and reasoning
    Supporting evidence
    Remaining uncertainties
    • The Charity Commission currently records Birmingham City, Leicester City and Somalia as places where the charity operates, but it does not identify Birmingham service locations, delivery venues, neighbourhoods or partner sites.
    • The charity's current activity description focuses on helping street children, orphan children and widows in Somalia. This leaves the scale and nature of any current Birmingham-facing delivery unclear.
    • The charity's registered contact address is not established by the available evidence as an active public-facing or service-delivery site. The Charity Commission also records that the charity does not own or lease land or property.
    • No current partnerships materially extending the organisation's operational reach within Birmingham were identified.
    Additional evidence needed
    • A current service timetable, referral information or project description specifying where Birmingham-based advice, education, translation, community or other services are delivered.
    • Confirmation from the organisation of whether its registered contact address is an operational base, a shared office or correspondence address.
    • Current annual report, impact report or project accounts describing activity in Birmingham, Leicester and Somalia.
    • Evidence from named delivery partners or venues confirming any active Birmingham-based provision.

    Observations

    Sources:Civic AtlasAI-assisted
    • A transnational support mission

The organisation appears to hold a dual role: supporting Somali people navigating exclusion and settlement in the UK, while also directing relief towards vulnerable people in Somalia.

      Why it matters

This is more than a local advice charity or an overseas-aid charity alone. If the two strands are connected, the organisation may hold relationships and insight across migration, diaspora and family-support networks that other services do not.

      • Its objects include relief for Somali refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in the UK and overseas.

      • It helps street children, orphan children, and widows in Somalia.

        Source:Organisation
    • Inclusion appears to be the organising logic

Its stated services suggest that immediate hardship relief is paired with longer-term participation: helping people access rights, services, education, training and employment.

      Why it matters

This may indicate an organisation oriented toward reducing structural barriers, rather than providing one-off assistance alone. It could therefore be a useful connector between Somali communities and mainstream welfare, housing, health and employment systems.

      • Its objects include advice, information, representation, translation and interpretation on asylum and immigration, welfare benefits, housing, health, education, training and employment.

      • Its objects include assisting inclusion in the wider community and helping economically disadvantaged Somali people participate more fully in society.

    • Language and representation may be a distinctive capability

The inclusion of translation, interpretation and representation suggests the organisation may address barriers created by language, immigration status and unfamiliarity with public systems.

      Why it matters

These functions can make an organisation a trusted intermediary, not just a service provider. This may create opportunities for collaboration with agencies that need stronger routes into Somali refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant communities.

      Remaining uncertainties

    • Whether the UK inclusion work and Somalia relief work are both active and how they are connected.
    • Where the organisation operates, how many people it reaches and which communities it currently prioritises.
    • Whether it delivers services directly, works through partners or mainly provides grants and referrals.

      Additional evidence needed

    • Recent annual reports, activity reports or financial accounts showing current programmes, locations and expenditure.
    • Information on beneficiaries, delivery partners, referral routes and outcomes from advice, interpretation and overseas-relief activity.
