South Birmingham Muslim Community Association
Charity 1197554
Overview
Summary
South Birmingham Muslim Community Association appears to be structured as both a faith community and a locally rooted civic resource. Its remit combines Islamic worship and public understanding with education, recreation and social-welfare activity across several South Birmingham wards. This suggests an organisation whose role may extend beyond congregational provision: it is positioned to convene residents, voluntary bodies and public authorities around shared local needs, while providing a culturally and religiously grounded place for Muslim participation.
Operational geography
Evidence and reasoning
Supporting evidence
Bournville and Cotteridge
Confidence: medium
SBMCA identifies Bournville Masjid and Community Centre as its venue, and states that it provides daily prayers and weekly children and young people's activities. However, the available evidence does not directly establish ward-level service delivery.
- SBMCA official website, About us
Identifies Bourneville Masjid & Community Centre and states that SBMCA provides five daily prayers, tuition, sports club and Qur'an classes. - SBMCA official website, Hall Booking
Lists Bournville Masjid and Community Centre as the bookable community-hall venue.
Weoley and Selly Oak
Confidence: medium
SBMCA's current official website says it works in service of the communities of Selly Oak and Weoley. This is direct evidence of a stated current service geography, but the available material does not identify service sessions or additional sites within the ward.
- SBMCA official website, About us
States that SBMCA works in service of the Muslim and wider communities of Bournville, Selly Oak, Weoley, Northfield and surrounding areas.
Northfield
Confidence: medium
SBMCA's current official website names Northfield among the communities it serves. However, the evidence does not specify a Northfield service venue, programme location or delivery frequency.
- SBMCA official website, About us
States that SBMCA works in service of the Muslim and wider communities of Bournville, Selly Oak, Weoley, Northfield and surrounding areas.
Remaining uncertainties
- The registered Charity Commission address differs from the operational venue promoted on SBMCA's website; the available evidence does not establish whether the registered address is used for service delivery or is solely a correspondence address.
- The available evidence confirms regular activities but does not state whether all listed services are delivered at Bournville Masjid and Community Centre or whether some use other venues.
- No current evidence was found of material delivery partnerships that extend SBMCA's operational reach beyond its venue and stated South Birmingham service communities.
- The Charity Commission records Birmingham City as the charity's reported operating area, but this is broader than the organisation's current, more specific website evidence and does not by itself demonstrate citywide delivery.
Additional evidence needed
- A current programme timetable or booking information showing the venue for each service.
- A current annual report or impact report describing service locations, participant catchments and any delivery partners.
- Confirmation from SBMCA of whether it operates regular activities or outreach sessions in Northfield or Weoley and Selly Oak beyond serving residents from those areas at Bournville Masjid and Community Centre.

Observations
A dual faith-and-civic mandate
The association appears to combine the advancement of Islam with a broader place-based aim to improve residents’ conditions of life. Its religious identity is therefore paired with an explicitly public, cross-community purpose.
Why it matters
This helps distinguish the organisation from one focused only on worship. It may be a bridge between Muslim residents, wider local communities and civic institutions.

Potential convening infrastructure for a dispersed area
The planned or supported community-centre function may be central to the organisation’s operating model: a physical setting for worship, education, recreation and relationships across multiple South Birmingham wards.
Why it matters
A maintained community venue can create capacity for informal support, partnership activity and repeated contact between groups, not only individual services.

Education may be the connection between religious and wider civic aims
Education, including language provision, classes and lectures, appears to be a shared mechanism through which the association can support both Muslim religious life and broader participation in local community life.
Why it matters
This suggests potential complementary relationships with adult learning, integration, youth and community-development organisations, rather than only other faith bodies.

- Whether the association currently operates a community centre, and which activities are active rather than merely permitted by its objects.
- Which residents use its services, whether non-Muslim participation occurs, and what partnerships with local authorities or voluntary organisations already exist.
- Whether advocacy and advice are substantial parts of its work or only recorded classifications.
Remaining uncertainties
- Recent annual reports, activity schedules and information about venue use, attendance and current programmes.
- Evidence of partnerships, referral routes, funding sources and the communities reached across its stated geographical area.
